Back by popular demand!!!  Mad Pride Jewelry and other ART pieces making Night!  Saturday July 17th, 6:30-8:30pm, Akasha Yoga Studio, FOR BOTH THOSE WITH ERD AND THEIR FRIENDS AND FAMILY

Being a peer-run organization, you might say that Dialectical Living is at the forefront of “Mad Pride” all year round!  Be Creative with ERD/BPD to make DBT jewelry and other itemswhich will then be sold at Mad Pride’s Mad Market, on July 15th.  This event will be FREE OF CHARGE, with all materials, and snacks supplied.  The studio is located on the upper level of 351 Danforth Ave at Akasha Studio.

The Mad Market will feature art by “mad” artists, consumers/survivors, and all those whose lives are touched by mental health challenges. Proceeds from the Mad Market will be going towards subsidized spaces in our DBT and Mindfulness classes!  At Dialectical Living, we frequently offer subsidized spaces for low-income consumers and we would love to do more of this.  Come out to make beautiful mental-wellness jewelry for a great cause.

Why is Mad Pride important?

Those in our society suffering from emotional and mental struggles are routinely pathologized and labelled in often stigmatizing and limiting ways.  Mad Pride is a movement to reclaim the narrative around what it means to live with mental health challenges. Mad Pride Toronto is a weeklong celebration of workshops and public events for those who have “survived” the mental healthcare system, their friends, families and supporters, and really anyone who identifies as experiencing moments of madness in their lives.

Opportunities for Peer Work:

We also invite any of you to participate as a peer at Dialectical Living’s Mad Pride Mad Market booth on July 15th!  What a great way to dip your toe into peer work in a validating and safe environment, surrounded by beautiful arts and crafts, all for a great cause.

With any questions or to RSVP for the Meetup email elizabeth@dialecticalliving.ca OR simply RSVP on our Meet-Up sites, Toronto Borderliners with Love and Toronto Borderliners with Love Friends and Family.

OPTIONAL: Bring a copy of your favourite poem, or one you feel speaks to something within the BPD experience.  You may choose to create a piece around this poem, or your own.  If we feel inspired, we can do some poetry reading aloud as a group.

This next project will be MY LIFE AS A COMIC CHARACTER! With pens, pencils and markers we will be creating short comics! I will be providing all materials. We will have a chance to present our stories to the rest of the group. I will be guiding you by informing you on the basic principles of comic artistry. What will we be depicting? We will have to pick a moment in our lives that impacted us and depict that moment through a story line graphically. It can be a happy memory, a sad memory or even a funny memory. It’s up to you where you want to take it! Picking something you are comfortable drawing and talking about is essential! We will start off with a bit of brainstorming to come up with ideas. Possible story ideas: • The first day I went to therapy • The day I met my spouse • The adventure I had with my best friend in high school • The day I lost my job • Etc….

Tea and Sharing Group for Family and Friends of people with BPD/ERD – Saturday April 9th 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM ( Cost is $15.00 to cover space rental and tea )

Akasha Studio, Suite 1 – 351 Danforth Ave

As promised, here is another meeting for the loved ones of people with BPD/ERD. Let’s get together at the Akasha Studio and share how we feel about being caregivers and friends of individuals with BPD/ERD.

Be Creative for BPD – Saturday April 2nd 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM (by donation/Minimum donation for this event is $10.00 to cover space rental and art supplies)

Who am I?

What do I like?

What should I do?

What are my values?

How am I feeling?

We are going to be depicting through art the different sides of our personalities. Having BPD/ERD traits can mean that we can often feel like we have different personalities, because our emotions can fluctuate so intensely! It will be helpful to identify those different parts by creating a poster with mixed media. We will then take turns to share what we created.

Keep in mind that if you aren’t sure about some of the aspects of your personality, you will be encouraged to include attributes that you would like to have.

Having BPD/ERD traits can leave us feeling confused about who we are as people. This poster will help us remember who we are!The little girl/boy, the fighter, the seducer, the martyr/victim, the perfectionist, the nurturer, the protector… we all have different attributes that define who we are. Instead of trying to pin point one specific definition of what it means to be us, the poster will help us see that we are complex beings, multifaceted and ever changing.

As usual, all materials will be provided by me!

Be Creative for BPD – Saturday Feb. 27th 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM ( by Donation/suggested donation $10.00 to cover space rental and tea $6.00 is the minimum donation )

This month we will be painting to music. Art therapy can be a tool to help us better understand our emotions/thoughts/relationships, but it can also be used for relaxation. There is a link between musical and visual expression – different music can represent different colours, shapes or textures. Some people can see colours when they hear different musical notes. This is called synesthesia. Many of the greatest painting masterpieces were influenced by music and vice versa. See Kandinsky’s “Composition VII” for inspiration.

For Kandinsky, painting and music were intertwined. “The sound of colors is so definite that it would be hard to find anyone who would express bright yellow with bass notes or dark lake with treble.” – Kandinsky

**This is for people with BPD/ERD, for people who think they have BPD/ERD and for people who don’t have BPD/ERD, but identify with some of the symptoms of BPD/ERD. If you have any issues with emotion regulation, this meetup is for you!

Suggested donation $5. We will be providing all the materials (if you like you can bring your own paint brushes/paints if you have a preference).

For more information please email ariane@dialecticalliving.ca Discussion for loved ones of persons with BPD/challenges with emotion regulation:  How can we support our borderlines?  Akasha Studio – Saturday March 12th 6:30 – 8:30 pm – 351 Danforth Avenue up the stairs top door on left Arian, our new organizer and I would love to get to know better the members of this group. Ariane has prepared a series of questions related to being a family member/friend of a borderline. Members who attend this meetup will take turns selecting a question randomly out of a hat. The selected question will be answered or passed on to the next person. This will be a great opportunity to talk about the feelings involved when a loved one has BPD and give each other feedback (if wanted). We will end the group with a discussion on what we can do to best support the borderline in our life. **This is for family and friends of borderlines only. This meetup will not be open to people with BPD. **
